The
<me> element can be used for longer expressions or a single equation. Typically you will get vertical separation above and below, and the contents will be centered. See below about concluding periods (and other punctuation), and alignment. The <men> variant will produce a numbered equation, and therefore with a provided @xml:id attribute, can be the target of a cross-reference (<xref>).
